US U-20s look to flex muscles in Panama match
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala ? When the United States meet Panama on Saturday in their second match of the U-20 CONCACAF Championship (6 pm ET, concacaf.com), they will already be through to the quarterfinals. Rather than focusing on a result, the Americans will look to improve upon the dominating performance they turned in during their first game.
Defensive lapse leaves United out in the cold
For D.C. United, it all came undone in a matter of seconds.
A makeshift defense kept the team within striking distance against Colorado throughout much of Sunday?s game, and United remained down a goal with 20 minutes to go. When Santino Quaranta dramtically equalized in the 70th minute, a har-earned result away from home was in sight.
But it all unraveled a minute later. Colorado defender Anthony Wallace had enough time to float in a cross into the D.C. box, and it found the head of an unmarked Jamie Smith, and just like that the Rapids were back in the lead.
Rowe brace keeps US undefeated, unscored upon
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala ? Kelyn Rowe was all the United States Under-20 side needed to defeat Panama 2-0 on Saturday night in the CONCACAF Championship. The UCLA forward tallied twice in the first 20 minutes as the Americans finished the opening round of the tournament undefeated and unscored upon.
With the win, the US easily finish on top of Group B. They will meet Guatemala in the quarterfinals on April 6, with the winner qualifying for the U-20 World Cup in Colombia this summer.
La Super Copa VI preview
This weekend, 16 of the top amateur squads in the area will take part in La Super Copa VI, the annual outdoor tournament of champions hosted by D.C. United and presented by Volkswagen. Each team earned a berth in the tournament by winning their respective adult league.
The action kicks off on Saturday at 9:00 a.m., when Spartan FC (Monarch?s Soccer League) takes on Palmeiras (Latin American League). The Aegean Hawks FC get their first crack at defending their La Super Copa V crown when they take on Inter De Virginia (Manassas Universal League) at 11 a.m.

United in Colorado: last minute changes
DAVIES TO MISS COLORADO MATCH
After pulling out of Saturday morning's training session with a slight groin problem, D.C. United forward Charlie Davies did not make the plane to Colorado. While the strain is nothing serious, United's medical staff did not want to press the issue and Davies will use the extra time to prepare for next week's slate of matches with Philadelphia (U.S. Open Cup play-in game) and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Perry Kitchen, the best central defender on the United States' U20 squad, played in the defensive midfield against Panama on Saturday night in his team's second match of the CONCACAF Championship. The D.C. United rookie wasn't perfect in the new role, but he showed well enough to lead the Americans to an easy victory over their only competition for the top spot in Group B.

United tweak back line ahead of Colorado tilt
WASHINGTON ? Heading into Sunday?s matchup with the Colorado Rapids (7 pm, Galavisin), D.C. United have a dizzying array of back line questions to answer.
With Dejan Jakovic suspended after picking up a red card last Saturday in a 2-1 loss against New England, Perry Kitchen on international duty with the US U-20s and right back Jed Zayner listed as questionable, three-quarters of their ideal starting defense may be unavailable.
That?s not a huge concern for coach Ben Olsen.

Undefeated Rapids defend home turf vs. United
Still undefeated to start the league season, the defending champion Colorado Rapids return home to take on D.C. United on Sunday afternoon. The Rapids made it 2-for-2 on the campaign with a win at Chivas USA last weekend. United won on First Kick but dropped their last contest, a 2-1 defeat at the New England Revolution.

Tough challenges await United in Colorado
WASHINGTON ? Facing the defending MLS Cup champions is never an enticing prospect. Having to do it on the heels of a disappointing performance in the previous outing makes it doubly grotesque.
But that's the situation for D.C. United, who travel to Colorado (7 pm ET, Galavisin) on Sunday seeking to bounce back from last week?s 2-1 loss at New England.

Armchair Analyst: No. 9 and other damning stats
First we?re going to look at why the US team is in a rut, and how that came to be. Then we?ll look at the numbers - be forewarned, they are grotesque - that the past 15 months have produced.
The main problem with the US team: There?s no center forward.
I?ve praised Jozy Altidore in this space before for his willingness to do the donkey-work of knocking-down headers, making unselfish passes and drawing fouls, all of which proved invaluable in the World Cup. His vision has improved by leaps and bounds, as has his strength on the ball.

Upbeat Rongen glad "rough game" out of way
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala ? The United States U-20 side did not play their best game against Panama on Saturday night. But listening to head coach Thomas Rongen, it's all part of the plan.
The American coach referenced the difficulties his squad had during the second game of recent CONCACAF championships ? ties in 2007 and ?09, and a narrow victory in ?03 ? and sounded relieved for the match to be over and done.

Youngster Gyau a confident catalyst for US attack
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala ? It's not so much the words coming out of Joe Gyau's mouth, but more the look in his eye.
The 18-year-old attacker, who surged through Suriname's defense again and again on Tuesday, understands how dangerous he was during the United States U-20s' opening match of the CONCACAF Championship.
Gyau scored, earned multiple free kicks and was the best player on the field for much of the 4-0 victory. Can he continue to do what he wants with the ball?
"I'm not going to say I don't feel like I can," he said, ?I'm pretty confident that I can.?
