Mike Wallace: NFL's Best Big-Play Wide Receiver?

When the Pittsburgh Steelers traded Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets this past offseason, the biggest question for the offense was who would replace him as the its big-play threat in the passing game. Holmes, for all of his problems off of the field (two suspensions: one by the team in 2008, one by the NFL in 2010, a now infamous and probably forgotten Twitter meltdown) was an impact player on it. A Super Bowl MVP and an explosive wide receiver capable of turning any pass into a touchdown.

The answer for his replacement was an easy one, coming in the form of second-year wide receiver Mike Wallace. Fresh off a rookie campaign that saw him finish with the highest yards-per-catch average in the NFL, he's emerged as not only the Steelers biggest impact player on offense, but also the best big play wide receiver in the NFL.

Graeme McDowell Dashes Tiger Woods' Comeback Attempt at Chevron Challenge

Filed under:

Graeme McDowellTHOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- There was golf history made Sunday at Sherwood Country Club -- but it didn't include a fairy tale ending for Tiger Woods.

In a dramatic, back-and-forth final round, Graeme McDowell came back from four strokes down to overtake Woods and win the $5 million Chevron World Challenge, sinking two consecutive long birdie putts at the 18th hole - one in regulation, and another in a sudden death playoff . McDowell's Sunday surge marked the first time Woods had failed to win an event that he had led by three strokes going into the final round.

It was, in a way, a fittingly disappointing conclusion to a forgettable 2010 for the world's most famous golfer, whose personal life was turned upside down a year ago after revelations about his extra-marital affairs. Woods, who turns 35 later this month, has not won a tournament in 378 days, by far the longest winless streak of his professional career -- and likely the longest such drought of his life.

Despite the near-miss and his inability to hold a lead, Woods showed few signs of disappointment after the round. "It was a great week even though I didn't win," he said. "It said a lot for me to come back and put my swing back together again. I'm just really excited about this offseason, and I haven't been that way in a while."

For McDowell, the Northern Ireland native and 2010 U.S. Open champion, it was yet another memorable moment in a fantastic season that's seen him climb to No. 7 from No. 39 on the World Golf Rankings.

Kevin Garnett Leaves Celtics Game With Right Leg Injury

Kevin Garnett left Wednesday night's game against the Detroit Pistons with a right leg injury. X-rays were taken on the Boston Celtics' star and were negative.

The 16-year veteran will reportedly have an MRI in Boston on Thursday. In addition to the initial prognosis, boston.com reported that a teammate noted the injury was not "as serious as it appeared." The Celtics initially termed it a lower leg injury, and multiple reports indicate that it is believed to be a calf injury, not a knee injury.

Penalized Ohio State Players Vow to Return Next Year

Filed under:

The five Ohio State University football players suspended for part of the 2011 season have pledged to return next year and serve their suspensions, because if they hadn't, they would not have been allowed to play in Monday's Sugar Bowl, coach Jim Tressel said Thursday.

Terrelle Pryor, DeVier Posey, Mike Adams and Dan Herron would all have legitimate options to enter the NFL Draft rather than return for their senior seasons, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reported. Defensive end Solomon Thomas is the other suspended player.

But Tressel said in a news conference Thursday in New Orleans that the players had vowed to return for 2011 and be suspended for the first five games of the season as a condition for playing in the bowl game.

The vow is non-binding, so there's nothing to stop any of them from changing their minds and entering the draft after the Sugar Bowl, the paper said.

Tressel also said he would not bench the players or punish them in any way for the Monday night game against the Arkansas Razorbacks at the Superdome. He said he would base his decisions about playing time only on football issues.

Celebratory Salute Mars Wild Pinstripe Bowl Victory for Syracuse

The inaugural Pinstripe Bowl deserved better.

Trailing Syracuse 36-28 with just over a minute left, Kansas State rallied to within two points on a 30-yard scoring strike from Carson Coffman to Adrian Hilburn. Hilburn cruised to the back of the end zone then offered a quick military-style salute to fans seated around the end zone. That gesture drew an "excessive celebration" penalty that forced the Wildcats' two-point attempt to be moved back 15 yards to the 18. It predictably failed. It was the salute soon to be discussed around the world, marring one of the better bowl games this year.

A surge of outrage emerged on Twitter and likely soon the rest of the college football world in questioning whether the NCAA's celebration and sportsmanship rules have gone too far.

Unfortunately that discussion will overshadow the Orange's surprising revival under coach Doug Marrone.

In two years Marrone turned one of the FBS' worst programs into a bowl winner. Although the Orange defense carried the program through much of 2010, the offense finally woke up in time to run and throw all over the Kansas State defense.

Golf's Power Shifting From U.S. to Europe; PGA Tour Feeling the Heat

The Europeans' recent domination of men's professional golf in 2010 is going be an ongoing topic heading into next season.

You know the reasons. England's Lee Westwood is the world's new No. 1. The Europeans have seven of the world's top 11 players compared to four Americans. Europe won the Ryder Cup. Young stars Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Martin Kaymer of Germany are declining to play full time in the U.S. next year, committing to the European Tour.

More and more Americans are making appearances overseas -- at the expense of PGA Tour events.

"The golf courses and the tournaments and the players on the European Tour are definitely catching up to us," admitted PGA Tour veteran Billy Mayfair.

In golf's big picture, could that be a good thing?

Hall of Famer Greg Norman, who has proven to know a lot about business success, believes it.

"I think it's great for golf, to tell you the truth," Norman said. "When I was overseas and all this was taking place with the change in the No. 1 player in the world and the Europeans winning the Ryder Cup, I thought, you know, this is just the shot in the arm that the game of golf needs."

Golf has seen similar shifts before. The Americans owned the world game with Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Lee Trevino. Europe followed with Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros and Ian Woosnam, to hold an upper hand in the 1980s and early '90s. Then the American regained control.

"Now it's swinging back again," Norman said.

What's interesting, however, is how many of the young Americans see the power shift.

Or, actually, how they do not see it.

"I can't speak for anybody else, but for me personally, I see them as people," Bubba Watson said. "I don't see them as Europeans or from other countries. I just see them as golfers.

"Some guys beat me, who cares where they're from. I'm from Baghad, Fla,. Nobody is around going, 'You're from a weird place,' you know. So I just see it as some great golfers beat me no matter where they come from."

If Norman's predictions are true, Watson might be wise to pay just a bit more attention.

While visiting China recently, Norman was asked to address the Tourism and Golf Forum.

"They want 30 million golfers in China in the next years, and there's three million now," Norman said. "When you think there's 24, 25 million golfers in the United States and it's been that number for decades and decades, imagine when China comes online in 20 years down the line.

"And then when China comes online, you've already got the Koreans doing extremely well. The development of the game of golf in Malaysia and Indonesia and Vietnam and Cambodia, to a degree, is just starting to skyrocket. And then you bring in India.

"So you got pretty much 50 percent of the world's population just starting to get into the game of golf. So when you start looking out into the future, it's extremely healthy. "

NHL's John Collins Discusses Evolution, Success of Winter Classic

Contrary to legend, John Collins did not invent the NHL Winter Classic. The game of ice hockey has been played outdoors for well over a century. The Heritage Classic, played in an Edmonton football stadium between the Oilers and Montreal Canadiens in 2003, predates the hiring of Collins as the league's chief operating officer.

But with projected ticket revenue of $9 million for the Classic at Heinz Field on New Year's Day between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals, plus countless streams from broadcasting and merchandising, Collins is grateful to the many executives who have built the event.

"When I started with the NHL four years ago, a lot of my colleagues had these amazing photos in their offices from the outdoor game in Edmonton," Collins told FanHouse while preparing to leave for Pittsburgh. "I'd been with the NFL and I wasn't familiar with the Heritage Classic. I was mesmerized by the photos. I would say to everyone, 'Tell me about this game' and 'Do you think we can do it again?' and 'How can we grow it as an event?' From there, it has been a completely collaborative effort."

Collins went on to name some of the collaborators. Consider these some of the founding fathers:
