Piniella will join the Giants' front office as a consultant, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The longtime player and manager is expected to serve as an adviser from his Tampa-area home.
He's a longtime friend of Giants general manager Brian Sabean dating to their days with the Yankees in the 1980s, and his vast experience in the game surely will come in handy at some point for the defending World Series champions.
Piniella, 67, announced last July 20 that he would leave the Cubs at the end of the season. But just over a month later, on Aug. 22, he said he would step down immediately, managing one final game that Sunday afternoon against the Braves at Wrigley Field. In the midst of a lost season for the Cubs, he wanted to get home to Florida and spend more time with his ailing mother, and immediate retirement allowed him to do so.
Now he'll at least have a hand back in the game as he joins the Giants, and we'll see how his role evolves going forward. After 23 years as a manager, though, it's probably safe to assume we've seen the last of Piniella in the dugout.
