Matt Moulson Signs 3-Year Extension With Islanders

Filed under:

After being let go by the Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings, the New York Islanders were willing to take a chance on Matt Moulson prior to the 2009-10 season. Not much was expected from the former ninth-round draft pick when he signed his initial one-year deal with club, but after a promising performance during the preseason he not only made the final roster, but was skating on the teams top line next to No. 1 overall pick John Tavares.

The Islanders were rewarded with a 30-goal season, and on Thursday, Moulson was rewarded with a brand new three-year contract extension worth over $9 million. In 49 games this season he's scored 17 goals, good enough for second on the team (trailing only Tavares) and has a shot at reaching the 30-goal plateau for the second consecutive season.

He would have been an unrestricted free agent following this season had the Islanders not signed him to a new deal, which sparked some speculation that he could be used as a trade chip prior to February's deadline. Signing him, however, should have been an easy decision as he's not only proven to be a useful player for the Islanders, they were going to need to spend money on somebody to stay above the NHL's salary floor, which they've been close to during the 2010-11 season. Why not spend it on a player that's proven his value to the team and seems to fit in?
