PGA Tour Q-School's 10 Best Qualifiers

Filed under:

Billy Mayfair The PGA Tour's Q-School has always been a test of nerves, physical conditioning, and mental fortitude. It's intended to test the mettle of young players and make them earn their way onto the top tour in golf. Veteran Billy Mayfair proved last week that experience trumps energy level, as he claimed medalist honors from the 166-man field.

Mayfair and eight other players over the age of 30 were among the 29 qualifiers that earned a tour card for 2011. Some other numbers of note about your newest Tour members include seven international players, only eight players without a PGA Tour start in their career, and 18 of the 29 will officially be rookies in 2011.

Now that you know the make-up of the 29 qualifiers, let's take a look at who is most likely to make an impact in 2011:

(Editor's Note: Because many of the qualifiers are untested on the big Tour, we're not going to attempt to rank them. Alphabetical order for your enjoyment.)

Giants' Organic Run to Title Energizes City

All this week, the FanHouse staff will look back at the most significant baseball storylines of 2010.

The San Francisco Giants gave as much as they got, and gave some more, and got some more, and on and on it went until the wonderfully reciprocal thing among ballclub and fans and the baseball gods mushroomed into the sport's best story of 2010.

The team's wild journey ultimately brought San Francisco its first World Series trophy, which inspired other journeys from everyday folks. Giants fans euphoric over the end of a decades-long World Series drought traveled from both near and far to the sun-washed city. Converging from as far as other states and Southern California, some Giants fans, making like Sal Paradise in "On The Road," had driven all day and all night. A Giants victory parade beckoned. Upon arrival, grownups cried and spoke in disbelief.

It was all pretty ridiculous, and somehow organic and authentic in these overly packaged times. And the confetti and sappy talk on that November day, well, one would've thought it was a presidential inauguration.

"This day is a blessed reminder of a dream fulfilled for all of us," Giants president Larry Baer said after tens of thousands of fans crowded into the city.

Aaron Rodgers Mastering the QB Arts

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- A 15-yard run brought Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers six yards from the end zone, but several New York Giants defenders closed in on him.

Rather than risk a third concussion this season, Rodgers voluntarily ended the play by sliding feet first to the ground like a baseball player before jumping up like an umpire to signal "Safe!" with his arms extended.

"A smart play," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "He doesn't get paid to go head-first into collisions."

But, McCarthy added, he was not naive. Late in a close game, the coach said, Rodgers might indeed have continued head-first to the goal line. "And I would be fine with that," McCarthy said.

Rodgers, when asked if he would have surrendered so easily late in a close game, quickly replied "Yes" but then gave a more elaborate answer when asked about courage, safety and brain injuries.

"I'm not going to change the way that I play because of the injuries I've sustained," Rodgers said. "Obviously, when it's your head, it's a little different story. But I trust the doctors and our medical staff. They cleared me, and I felt confident going back on the field."

Antonio Gates' Foot Injury Ends His Season

San Diego Chargers' tight end Antonio Gates was officially ruled out of San Diego's season finale Sunday at Denver when the team on Thursday placed him on injured reserve because of lingering foot injuries.

Gates had missed five of the previous seven games with turf toe and a torn plantar fascia in his right foot. They were the first games the star tight end had missed due to injury in his career.

NHL Year in Review: Flyers vs. Bruins Game 7 for Game of the Year

The hero is wearing a different color sweater and the Philadelphia Flyers have the sort of swagger that may not allow such a sneak attack again -- at least for a very long while.

But on May 14, Simon Gagne sealed one of the most unlikely comebacks in NHL history. His tally with seven minutes left in regulation allowed the Flyers -- who were trailing 3-0 in the second-round series and by the same margin in Game 7 -- to overtake the Boston Bruins with a 4-3 decision.

"It's unbelievable to be part of something like that," said Gagne, now a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning, after the game. "All the guys are happy to be part of something big like that. We didn't do it the easy way, but we are part of history now."

Kevin Garnett Could Miss Two Weeks With Strained Calf

Kevin GarnettBoston's Kevin Garnett could miss two weeks with a strained right calf -- and that's just fine by GM Danny Ainge.

Garnett missed the entire 2009 playoffs with a right knee injury that eventually required surgery, so Ainge was initially concerned after seeing the All-Star forward limp off the court Wednesday in Detroit. But an MRI performed Thursday confirmed the team's postgame prognosis: Garnett suffered a simple muscle injury that's unrelated to his previous ailment.

"It's a muscle injury, a strained calf," said Ainge in a radio interview with Boston's WEEI. "It's actually the softer side of the leg below the knee. It's not anything to do with his knee, which is great news, and it's one of those injuries that he may be out for a couple of weeks at the most. That's my guess. It's always a guess. I'll just say two weeks. I think that's on the conservative side."

Garnett was hurt when he jumped for a dunk with 2:38 left in the first quarter of a 104-92 loss at the Detroit Pistons. The forward, who is averaging 15.4 points and a team-leading 9.8 rebounds, limped down the court before leaving the game.

As Garnett goes on the shelf, Rajon Rondo could return -- although it's unclear if that will be Friday against the New Orleans Hornets or sometime soon after. Rondo has missed the last six games with a sprained ankle.

"Rajon is getting better," Ainge said. "It was a pretty severe sprain. Rajon is in a situation where he could play, but he's in pain still. He has pain on both sides of the ankle and we just don't want to get him back on to the court until he can play hard."
