Aaron Rodgers Mastering the QB Arts

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- A 15-yard run brought Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers six yards from the end zone, but several New York Giants defenders closed in on him.

Rather than risk a third concussion this season, Rodgers voluntarily ended the play by sliding feet first to the ground like a baseball player before jumping up like an umpire to signal "Safe!" with his arms extended.

"A smart play," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "He doesn't get paid to go head-first into collisions."

But, McCarthy added, he was not naive. Late in a close game, the coach said, Rodgers might indeed have continued head-first to the goal line. "And I would be fine with that," McCarthy said.

Rodgers, when asked if he would have surrendered so easily late in a close game, quickly replied "Yes" but then gave a more elaborate answer when asked about courage, safety and brain injuries.

"I'm not going to change the way that I play because of the injuries I've sustained," Rodgers said. "Obviously, when it's your head, it's a little different story. But I trust the doctors and our medical staff. They cleared me, and I felt confident going back on the field."
