Bill Parcells Targeted for Advice by 49ers President Jed York in GM Search

The report that the San Francisco 49ers will be looking for advice on a general manager hire from Dolphins' executive Bill Parcells shouldn't come as a big surprise.

Jed York, the San Francisco club president, is just 29 and is still learning on the job. Parcells has been around just shy of forever and knows how to evaluate the men who evaluate football talent for a living.

Multiple reports from ESPN.com and SI.com, among others, said York wants to ask Parcells, currently a Dolphins' consultant, for his opinion on current 49ers' vice president of player personnel Trent Baalke, who is one of the candidates for the job. Parcells, while with the New York Jets, hired Baalke.

Meanwhile, York has talked with former NFL executives Michael Lombardi and Tony Softli about the open general manager's job.

San Francisco needs both a new general manager and a new head coach in the wake of the firing of Mike Singletary late Sunday. First up is to get a general manager in place, and York says the GM will make the call on the coach.

There are suggestions that York will ask Parcells' opinion on the general state of the 49ers, who were favored to win the NFC West this year but got off to an 0-5 start and ultimately were eliminated from competition with a loss in St. Louis last week.

Baalke and York apparently are both in Florida, as is Parcells and one of the club's coaching candidates. Jim Harbaugh's 11-1 Stanford team is playing in the Rose Bowl. Harbaugh is likely to get a call from Michigan, and Stanford reportedly is offering a contract extension if he stays.
