Winter Classic Weather Concerns: Warm Weather, Rain, Possible Delays

Since the NHL started doing the Winter Classic four years ago it's been extremely lucky when it comes to gameday weather. That could all change this weekend in Pittsburgh where the Penguins are set to host the Washington Capitals in the annual New Years Day event. The biggest concern with playing an NHL game outside, in the elements, is of course, the elements. Especially when it's being played in a climate like Pittsburgh where January weather could be, well, anything. On a given day you could experience anything from snow, to rain, to temperatures in the single digits or unseasonable warmth in the 50's or 60's.

Early forecasts for Saturday's game, which is scheduled to start at 1 PM ET, are calling for temperatures in the low 50's and a chance of rain. According to Don Craig, the man overseeing the construction of the rink at Heinz Field, the forecast for Saturday, which is still subject to change given that it's days away, would be acceptable playing conditions.

Said Craig, via Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, "Anything that's within the forecast right now, it falls down and it's going to freeze and we're going to be in good shape."
