Penalized Ohio State Players Vow to Return Next Year

Filed under:

The five Ohio State University football players suspended for part of the 2011 season have pledged to return next year and serve their suspensions, because if they hadn't, they would not have been allowed to play in Monday's Sugar Bowl, coach Jim Tressel said Thursday.

Terrelle Pryor, DeVier Posey, Mike Adams and Dan Herron would all have legitimate options to enter the NFL Draft rather than return for their senior seasons, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reported. Defensive end Solomon Thomas is the other suspended player.

But Tressel said in a news conference Thursday in New Orleans that the players had vowed to return for 2011 and be suspended for the first five games of the season as a condition for playing in the bowl game.

The vow is non-binding, so there's nothing to stop any of them from changing their minds and entering the draft after the Sugar Bowl, the paper said.

Tressel also said he would not bench the players or punish them in any way for the Monday night game against the Arkansas Razorbacks at the Superdome. He said he would base his decisions about playing time only on football issues.
