When word came that New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was to be honored as Sports Illustrated's 2010 Sportsman of the Year, it was tough to argue.
Each December, the magazine recognizes an athlete or team whose performance "most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement." Anyone would be crazy to make an argument against Brees.
Not only did he lead the once-woebegone Saints on an inspiring run to the first Super Bowl championship in franchise history, but since Brees' arrival in New Orleans from San Diego via free agency in 2006, he has been a front man in the region's rebuilding efforts following the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and again after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill this year.
The image of Brees hoisting his son, Baylen, into the air following the historic 31-17 defeat of the favored Indianapolis Colts, then crying as he kissed the toddler on the cheek amid a rainstorm of confetti, was one of the most moving sights of the sports year.
