Maryland comes in under a cloud of coaching controversy. Ralph Friedgen has led the program to seven bowl trips in the past 10 seasons. The same program had only one bowl trip between 1986 and 2000. An abysmal 2009 was erased with an 8-4 season in 2010, which earned Friedgen ACC coach of the year honors. That didn't stop athletic director Kevin Anderson from ousting Friedgen, as the Military Bowl will be his final game as Terrapins coach.
The Terps are led by electric wide receiver Torrey Smith, who caught 65 passes for 1,045 yards and 12 touchdowns during the regular season. Danny O'Brien is the quarterback and he's thrown for 2,257 yards and 21 touchdowns against only six interceptions.
East Carolina brings a high-octane passing offense to D.C. under first-year coach Ruffin McNeill. Only one quarterback has thrown more touchdown passes than Dominique Davis and he ranks eighth nationally in passing yards. The junior has thrown for 3,699 yards and 36 TDs. Though it's a big arsenal, his main weapons are wide receivers Dwayne Harris (93 catches, 1,055 yards, 10 touchdowns) and Lance Lewis (78 catches, 979 yards, 13 TDs).
ECU comes in a bit cold, having lost four of five since a 5-2 start. Maryland closed its season with a big win over N.C. State.
