Filed under: Akron, Notre Dame, MACAKRON, Ohio -- His eyes are not bloodshot, his voice does not shake and his lip does not quiver. In fact, Rob Ianello seems more steadfast and resolute than anything.
The coach of one of two winless teams in the FBS is not happy being 0-9, but he has not wavered in his belief that he can build a sustained and winning program at the University of Akron. And the faith of his athletic director, the guy who hired him, remains unwavering.
"It's strengthened my belief (in him), actually," Tom Wistrcill, Akron's AD, said of a long and difficult season. "He's not happy. No one's happy with the record. But obviously we're going to be patient with him as he builds his program."
This was not the script Ianello, Wistrcill or Akron wrote when Ianello was hired away from Notre Dame in December to sign a five-year deal to be Akron's head coach. The Zips were coming off a 3-9 season and two of the wins were over a winless Eastern Michigan team and Morgan State of the Football Championship Subdivision, brought in to open Akron's new $60-million stadium.
