Hannan brings the Capitals rock-solid durability (he's missed just seven games since the 2002 season) and the type of presence they've been missing on their blue line, and one that will come in handy for the second season in April and May. He's in the final year of a contract that pays him $4.5 million per season, and the 31-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent following the season.
"Being with a team where you can fit in right away is something that you want," Hannan said in a conference call with reporters. "I know I can play that role with many other teams, (but) I relish the fact that I can do that in Washington."
According to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, via Twitter, Hannan's contract contained a no-trade clause that he had to waive in order to complete the trade.
