Filed under: Air Force, ArmyFor the first time in quite a while, Army goes into this weekend's game against Air Force with a legitimate shot of winning.
That's not to say the Black Knights don't always "think" they can beat their military academy brethren. In 2005, the Black Knights defeated Air Force 27-24, though both teams finished the season 4-7. That's one of just two wins Army has notched since 1989 in the series. The other was 1996, which, coincidently, was the last time the Black Knights won the Commander-in-Chief Trophy.
But this year is different. Army is 5-3, including a win over Duke, which just beat Navy. The Black Knights' three losses have been by an average of 4.3 points per game.
"I think our guys feel like we belong," Army second-year coach Rich Ellerson said. "I think we feel like it's still uphill, but we feel like we belong. We feel like we're playing at that level, we're competing at that level. Have we caught (Air Force)? No. You don't do that in a year. But we've leveled the playing field. It's an uphill fight, don't get me wrong, but we're playing at that level, playing against those kinds of people, we're making those plays. We feel like we belong, belong in the hunt for the CIC Trophy." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
