Police: Family Taking Pictures Before Toddler Fell to Death at Staples Center

Staples center suiteFamily members of the 2-year-old boy who fell to his death after Sunday's Golden State Warriors-Los Angeles Lakers game at Staples Center were taking pictures moments before the accident, police said on Monday.

Lucas Anthony Tang scaled a glass partition in a luxury suite and suffered head injuries from a fall of at least 20 feet. The Los Angeles Times reported Tang's family was reviewing digital photos and lost track of their son, a detail Los Angeles police would not verify.

Tang was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to police. An investigation by the LAPD's juvenile division has been launched, a normal course of action for deaths of children 11 and younger.

"It's a very sad situation and we're very sorry for that family," Lakers coach Phil Jackson told the newspaper after practice on Monday.

The Lakers also released a prepared statement: "The Lakers organization would like to express our shock and sadness at the death of Lucas Anthony Tang. To go from a moment of happiness and enjoyment, to the loss of this boy's life, is tragic and heartbreaking. We would like to ask Lakers fans to join us in keeping Lucas and his family in our thoughts and prayers."

Any witnesses of the fall were asked to contact the LAPD.

"Our condolences and prayers go out to the Tang family," Staples Center spokesman Michael Roth said in statement. "We are working with the Los Angeles Police Department on the investigation of this tragedy."
