Colorado's Capitulation an Indictment of MLS's Broken Playoff System

Filed under: MLS, Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, FC Dallas, Los Angeles Galaxy, New York Red Bulls, Real Salt LakeThe Rocky Mountain Cup, contested each season by the Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake, has been a fierce rivalry since the moment RSL joined Major League Soccer in 2005. But it has never been as thrilling as it was on Saturday evening.

Trailing 2-0 in the 90th minute of the game at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, visiting Salt Lake engineered an incredible comeback and scored two stoppage-time goals in the span of four minutes. The 2-2 draw sent the Cup back to Utah.

RSL's first goal came in the 91st minute after Álvaro Saborío seized upon a terrible clearance by Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens. Saborio struck again in the 95th, burying a penalty kick earned when Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan took down Jámison Olave in the box. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
