James Shields: Rays Are 'Team to Beat'

Filed under: Rangers, Rays, MLB Playoffs, American League Division SeriesThe Rays raised some eyebrows in tabbing James Shields and his 5.18 ERA to start Game 2 of the Division Series. But if folks around Tampa Bay aren't necessarily feeling confident about Shields, the Rays' longest-tenured pitcher has no doubts about the ability of his team.

"We had the best record in the American League, so as far as I'm concerned we're the team to beat," Shields told reporters Tuesday, "and I think those other teams in the playoffs, they know that."

At 96-66, Tampa Bay fell one win shy of the Phillies for the best record in the majors, and Philadelphia seems to be getting the bulk of the love when it comes to postseason predictions. But the Rays obviously are confident heading into the playoffs despite a mediocre final month of the season that saw them post a 15-15 record down the stretch. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
