Jimmie Johnson Takes NASCAR Championship Lead

Filed under: Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR

It took all of three playoff races for NASCAR's four-time defending Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson to stake his claim atop this year's standings.

Johnson's runner-up finish Sunday at Kansas Speedway coupled with Hamlin's 12th place effort vaulted the four-time champ to an eight-point edge over Hamlin with seven races remaining in the Chase for the Sprint Cup playoff run. It was particularly encouraging for Johnson, whose No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet was a disappointing 21st fastest in qualifying and spun out during final practice.

"That sounds awesome,'' Johnson said when ESPN reporter Jamie Little asked him about his new title: points leader.

"Getting second at the end was really cool. We had some strategy work against us and worked our way back through. We feel really good about it, but there's a lot of racing left. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
