Virginia Tech Halts N.C. State Fairytale

Filed under: NC State, Virginia Tech, ACCRALEIGH, N.C. -- One month into the 2010 college football schedule, the unfettered hopes of July and August already reduced to painful reality once again, the only team in the Atlantic Coast Conference still making national headlines each week is North Carolina.

Ugly headlines, but headlines nonetheless.

There haven't been enough feel-good stories to overcome the conference-wide mediocrity displayed in losses to national powers from the SEC, Big Ten and Pac-10, among others, or lift the ACC beyond the seediness of a Tar Heels program that oozes bad news week to week as university, state and NCAA investigations into improprieties drag on.

Which is why Saturday night's thrilling 41-30 victory by Virginia Tech over No. 23 North Carolina State at Carter-Finley Stadium was great drama, but yet another shot in the heart of the ACC.

Through the first month of the season, the Wolfpack had been the best story in the conference. Counted out from day one, picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Division behind Florida State, Clemson and Boston College, N.C. State emerged as a contender in a perfect 4-0 September. The Wolfpack had earned a national ranking for the first time since September, 2003.
