Chad Henne Receiving Solid Protection From Dolphins' Offensive Line

Filed under: Dolphins, AFC EastDAVIE, Fla. -- Six games into the 2010 NFL season, Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne has proven to be among the league's best in third-down passing situations, completing 39-of-60 passes (65 percent) for 392 yards. That's good enough for 105.7 passer rating, which is the third-best in the NFL.

One of the reasons for Henne's success has been his offensive line, which has only allowed Henne to be sacked 10 times for an average of less than once per game. That's the fourth-fewest in the league and Henne credits the fact that he has been given plenty of time in those critical situations for his success. He also appreciates the type of pocket he has been given, which I wrote about Wednesday on Dolphins.com.

"I think our offensive line has been doing a great job in pass protection and of keeping me healthy and standing upright," Henne said. "Jake did a really good job on (Steelers outside linebacker James) Harrison and obviously with LaMarr (Woodley) that helped us out a little bit. But inside we were stout and Vernon did a really good job on the outside, so overall the pass protection has been real good."

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano came up through the professional coaching ranks as an offensive line coach,so he has a greater appreciation for what it is those guys in the trenches actually do. They have done it against some of the best pass rushing defenses around like the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and the Steelers.

"In the six games that we've had right now I would say that there isn't one game where they hit us more than we hit them on the other side, meaning number of hits on quarterbacks," said Sparano, whose background is as an offensive line coach. "I would say that for the amount of things they've seen and for us having to throw the ball in a couple of those games the amount of times that we had to throw the ball, I think they've really protected well."

Henne's backup is 11th-year veteran Chad Pennington, and he knows exactly what it takes to form the perfect pocket for a quarterback. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
